Sankofa: The Soldier’s Tale Retold reimagines Igor Stravinsky’s “L'Histoire du Soldat” in a new libretto by poet Titilope Sonuga. Through the journey of a fictional soldier attempting to enlist in WWI, this Soldier's Tale is set against the historical context of the No. 2 Construction Battalion — the only Canadian battalion composed of Black soldiers to serve in the First World War. In a psychological battle with the devil on the road to enlisting, the soldier embodies the battalion’s resilience and enduring struggle against racism, discrimination and historical erasure. Like the symbol of the Sankofa bird from which this story draws its name (a word in the Twi language of Ghana which means to go back and retrieve what was forgotten), this work blends past and future as the rhythm of Sonuga's poetry weaves through Stravinsky's original music. Sankofa is an invitation to honour a difficult history while moving toward a more promising future.

Run Time: One hour, no intermission
Content Notice: Mature subject matter. Gun sound effects.

Sankofa: The Soldier’s Tale Retold was originally commissioned by Art of Time Ensemble and Against The Grain Theatre.

A NOTE FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, ANDREW BURASHKO:

The idea for this production first came to me more than four years ago, so it’s been a thrill to finally watch it come into focus over the last six months. Re-envisioning Stravinsky’s score with a new narrative and staging allows for new ownership, new authorship, and new audiences. I am proud beyond words to end Art of Time’s concert series with this production. It is an important and opportune moment for such creative and radical experimentation.

Thank you for joining us tonight and for the last 25 years.

A NOTE FROM LIBRETTIST, TITILOPE SONUGA:

This work is a meditation on the cyclical nature of history and the enduring strength of the human spirit. With this libretto, I sought to exhume a piece of history and, through the African ethos of Sankofa, reach back to reclaim what was forgotten — allowing past, present, and future to exist in a necessary conversation about racism and erasure in a Canadian context. I hope this work inspires reflection and deepens our connection to a shared humanity.
